This article helps citizens identify the best official resources available to find arrest photographs from local Comal County offices to state agencies.

Uncover Free Platforms To View Mugshots

Booking photographs, also known as mugshots, are part of the information available in arrest and criminal records. These photos are taken after an individual is arrested by the police department at the city level, or by the sheriff’s department if the crime is of larger scale or at the county level.

As the keeper of arrest and criminal records, the law enforcement agencies maintain the best platforms for finding mugshots of various offenders; the images can often be viewed for free. These agencies can be from the local area – including the police departments in every city and town, the county sheriff’s office, and the state correction department.

Most of these departments have online rosters for searching inmate records. If a search tool is not available or a specific record cannot be found, researchers may instead contact these agencies or process a records request online or through other methods. More details will be provided further below in this resource.

How To Locate Comal County Mugshots Without Fees

The Comal County Sheriff’s Office is a law enforcement agency that provides full services to the community, including patrol operations, traffic enforcement and education, criminal investigations, warrant and civil process, and more.

The agency also maintains an open relationship with the community providing information on various archived and recent events or activities to the public. This information includes details of arrestees and about the inmate population with their mugshots.

They have various online databases containing case records (probate case records, civil/family case records, and criminal case records) and jail rosters with mugshots of each inmate (jail inmate records and bond details) which can be browsed for free.

To find the detainees’ records in the jail inmate database, you may enter each defendant’s information – last and first name (required), middle name, date of birth, bond status, and date posted (if available) – or provide their booking number.1

The search results will show each matching profile’s booking number, defendant name, date of birth (DOB), booking and released date, arresting agency, and charges. Clicking the booking number of an inmate will route you to another page where you’ll find the individual’s mugshot and other information.

The same process can be done through the jail bond records search tool.2 You may provide each defendant’s information or the bond company’s name; the results will show the matching defendants’ booking number, full name, DOB, bond type, custody status, arrest date, bondsman, and charges. The link found in the dependent’s booking number will route you to a different page with the individual’s record and mugshot.

You could also process a jail open record request through online submission or by downloading the request form and submitting it via email, fax, or in person. The fees will be paid through exact cash or money order and will take up to ten (10) business days.

Once available, the record can be received via mail, email, or through pick-up based on your request.

Bail Bonding: Inmates may post their bond to be released early. The bonds they will pay can be a cash bond, a surety bond (with the help of any licensed bonding companies) , or a personal bond. All cash bonds and other fines must be paid in exact amounts through money order or a cashier’s check only.

Inmate Mail: Inmates are allowed to receive mail from family, friends, and other entities with the exception of some prohibited items.5 The senders must provide their full name (first and last name) and complete address for the mail to be accepted; and then write the information of the inmate following this format:

Inmate Funds: Anyone may send money to an inmate through the Correct Solutions Group using their website, via their customer service at 866.345.1884, or through their mobile app. The other options are by depositing the funds via the kiosk at the visitation lobby or by sending cash, money orders, or checks to the inmate through mail.

The inmates’ funds can be used to order commissary through the Lone Star Commissary and other services.

Inmate Visitation: Inmates can be visited through in-person and video visitation that must be scheduled in advance through the ICSolutions website, at the Bonding Lobby via kiosk, or by contacting 888.506.8407. Visitors must arrive 10 minutes earlier than the allotted time and have their valid government issued ID to be able to sign in and visit the inmates.

Exploring State & Federal Resources for Prison Mugshots (Texas)

There are two departments within the state that offer various online databases that can help you find the mugshots of state offenders.

These departments are the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) – responsible for the management of the state’s prison system and the supervision, rehabilitation, and the reintegration to the society of all convicted felons – and the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), which is tasked with providing various law enforcement services all throughout the state for the safety and protection of the public.

The Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) has an inmate information search tool that can be browsed by entering one or more details of an offender such as the last name, first name, TDCJ number, State Identification (SID) number, gender, and race.7

The results will show the offender’s full name, TDCJ number, race, gender, projected release date, unit of assignment, age, and other details through the link such as the individual’s maximum sentence date, parole eligibility date, and inmate visitation eligibility.

The search tool will not show the mugshots of prisoners, which is the same as the Criminal History Conviction Name Search of the Texas Department of Public Safety; however, you may use the information you obtained from the search to make a public information request to DPS or use the fingerprinting services to retrieve the mugshot of an individual.

The TDCJ agency does have another database where you can find photographs of sex offender absconders which you may also find and search through the Texas Sex Offender Registry.8

As the agency taking care of inmates housed in various federal prison facilities all throughout the United States, the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) can be contacted for any inquiries regarding these offenders. The BOP agency has 15 federal facilities located within Texas. None of these facilities are located within Comal County though.

You may run a search through the Bureau of Prisons’ federal inmate locator by providing either the offender’s first and last name or register number – from BOP, FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation), DCDC (District of Columbia Department of Corrections), or INS (Immigration & Naturalization Service) – to find the offender’s information and learn their current custody status.9

The result will show the matching profiles’ information – except for mugshots – such as their full name, register number, sex, race, age, release date, and location.

Clicking an offender’s information will lead you to its specific page with the individual’s details and relevant links that contains instructions on how to email or call the inmates in custody, send mail/package to them, deposit funds to their account, schedule a visit, or voice a concern to the BOP agency.

These days, members of the public can enjoy transparent access to abundant information such as public records of various individuals in Texas – including arrest, criminal, court, marriage, and divorce records – as availability is growing and online viewing is an option, especially with the modern technologies and state laws applied in connection to it, like the Public Information Act (PIA).10

This leads to both a positive (like learning many things for self-development) and negative outcomes (such as fake information and misappropriate use of information including identity theft, fraud, and discrimination).

To counter or minimize some of these negative impacts focusing on public records, the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) was enacted and applied by other areas as well such as by the Texas Workforce Commission to counter employment discrimination.11

Trusted resources are very important to get the most accurate information about an individual when conducting a Comal County mugshot search; official agencies are the best locations to retrieve this record, while being careful and responsible with the use of this data by following state laws.
